12 Biggest Bra Fit Myths Debunked

  by

In 12 years that I have been fitting I have had to debunk my share of bra myths. There is a lot of great bra information out there but there is also a lot of bra nonsense that is keeping many women from a more comfortable fit. So, how many of these bra fit 'facts' are actually real and which ones are untrue? (I will post the answers in the comments in a couple of days!)

1 - Your bra band should be parallel with the ground.

2 - Band Size is not important.

3 - After you measure round your ribcage you should add 4 inches to find your band size

4 - All bras in your size will fit you

5 - You should wash your bra after every wear

6 - Sleep in a bra to keep your breasts from sagging

7 - The gore should lie flat against your body between your breasts

8 - Straps falling off your shoulders is a normal part of wearing a bra

9 - The direction of the seams on a cup changes the shape of the look of your bust

10 - A really good bra will last forever

11 - Sports bras are not necessary

12 - Your bra size does not change that often

There are many, many more but if you can sort the facts from the myths in this list then you've got a good handle on what a good bra fit is!

As promised here are the anwsers to the above bra fitting myths :)

1 - Your bra band should be parallel with the ground | True, A band that rides up your back is a bra that doesn't fit you. You should be wearing a smaller band size.
2 - Band Size is not important | False, contrary to popular belief the support does not come from either the cup or the straps, it comes from the band and it is designed to carry the weight and thrust of our boobs. So band is responsible for how the whole bra looks, fits and feels. Get the band size wrong (this will show if it is loose or rides up) and the bra just won’t be an good fit. The best band size for you is one you’re most comfortable wearing on the first hook.
3 - After you measure round your ribcage you should add 4 inches to find your band size | False, with the growing availability of band sizes there is little need for women to add 4+ inches to their measurement. Instead of measure in cm and inches to fit the most comfortable fit.
4 - All bras in your size will fit you | False, just because a bra is in your size does not mean it will fit you. Style & cut play a huge role in which bras will fit you.
5 - You should wash your bra after every wear | False, it isn't really necessary to wear your bra after every wear (unless it’s a sweaty sports bra, of course!). And yes oil and dirt from your skin will eventually break down the fibres but washing too often will only shorten the life of the bra.
6 - Sleep in a bra to keep your breasts from sagging | False, although many women swear by it, there’s no evidence out there to back this claim. Lose the perkiness is predominantly dictated by your genes.
7 - The gore should lie flat against your body between your breasts | True, the gore should lie flat against your body. If you have a hollow or protruding sternum then you might find short, plunge style gores will fit you best.
8 - Straps falling off your shoulders is a normal part of wearing a bra | False, If your straps fall off then either your band is too big, your cups are too small or the style is wrong for your body shape.
9 - The direction of the seams on a cup changes the shape of the look of your bust | True, you can play with different looks and shapes with seamed bras because the direction of the seams gives you more or less push up.
10 - A really good bra will last forever | Nope. Bras realistically have a short life, depending on the material – up to 8 or 9 months for some, up to 2 years for others (but that’s really the limit).
11 - Sports bras are not necessary | False, You won't be able to really go for that workout, your run or your match if you’re self-conscious, uncomfortable or even sore – sadly, one study found over 55 percent of women surveyed experienced some kind of breast pain during exercise. If your boobs are get some serious bounce when you’re exercising, a good fitting sports bra is essential so excessive movement is minimised and well cushioned.
12 - Our bra size does not change that often | False, experts suggest the average woman’s bra size will change at least six times in her life. Think about it, from the early years of youth, losing weight or putting it on, exercise regimes, new diets, pregnancy and breastfeeding, hormone related medication (such as the Pill etc) and of course, ageing, our boobs are bound to change shape, size and weight throughout our lives.
